Otherwise known as 'The International
Motor Certificate' it is issued to drivers travelling on the
continent of Europe asproof that they have car insurance that
complies with the minimun insurance requirements of the states
they drive through.
Each Country has a car insurance bureau along the lines of
the MIB,
to guarentee the certificates issued by them.
The certificates have to be green in colour and contain the
kind of information found in a normal car
insurance certificate , for example persons insured to
drive, restrictions as to use etc. The Green cards alos show
the countries to which it applies.
Under EC directives Car Insurance companies in member states
such as the UK must include within their policies the minimum
third party cover as required by member states. consequently
Green Cards are no longer a legal requirement within EC countries,
but they continue to be used as the have aquired a recognition
in their own right and make negotions easier for the car driver
with the authorities if he is involved with an accident.
For travel outside the EC they remain necessary as failure to produce a green card will necessitate the driver to buy insurance locally. It should be noted that it is wise to inform your insurance company if you are considering taking your car abroad, and this is mandatory if you require cover in excess of the legal minimum requirements. check with your Car insurance company before you travel to find out if a Green Card is Required
